Why Become a Volunteer?

Volunteering gives you the opportunity to meet new people, to learn new skills, to gain valuable job experience, but most important of all a chance to make a difference in your community. You can volunteer to help in the administration of our office. You can receive specialized training to help victims of crime. You can work on doing research and help to design seminars for presentation to various segments of the community. You can get out in the community on a bike and help find stolen cars or you can learn about the rich history of Chinatown and be an ambassador, assisting and giving information to tourists. These are just a few examples of the type of things our volunteers do.

All volunteers share the common goal of wanting to make a difference in their community. Many of our volunteers say that they get out of the program much more than they feel they've put in. it's a great experience.

Yvonne Lee Memorial Award

The Yvonne Lee Memorial Award was created as a tribute to one of our beloved volunteers, Yvonne Lee. Yvonne had dedicated her time and energy volunteering for our Special Events; whether it was monthly park clean-ups, rain or shine, or our outreach information booths, she could always be counted on to be there. Yvonne was also our resident movie star, starring in many of our crime prevention videos. Many of our staff and volunteers remember Yvonne for her generousity, kindness and passion for helping others. Yvonne passed away in November 2015.

The Yvonne Lee Memorial Award is an annual award presented to a volunteer who makes expectional contributions to our volunteer program and the community.
