Volunteer Testimony - Ivy Tam
I have been a volunteer with the Chinese Community Policing Centre
since March 19, 2003. It is really a good experience. I think this
started a new page in my life after my retirement. I offer my assistance
to the Coordinators to help the victims of crime (most of them are
Chinese) in fields such as fraud, assault cases and so on. This
is an opportunity to get in touch with a great variety of cases,
and I have learned a great deal about Chinese society as well as
the Canadian culture throughout my times at the CCPC.
Volunteer Testimony - Sunny Leung
After graduating from university, I realized that I haven' had
much work experience. I knew that employers were reluctant to hire
students who have not been out in the workforce. I came to realize
that employers do actually look at volunteer experience when deciding
whom to hire. Volunteering shows employers that I am capable of
picking up the communication skills crucial in working with other
people. Volunteering shows employers that I will take the initiative
to learn new things. Volunteering shows employers that I have the
dedication to give my time to help others. For these reasons, I
appreciate volunteering with the Chinese Community Policing Centre.
Now I am the coordinator for the Neighbours First program, and experiences
I gained while volunteering have proved to be very useful.
Volunteer Testimony - Dominic Tong (Career Prep Student)
Volunteering in CCPC saw me gaining knowledge and experience in
the area of law and crime. While volunteering in CCPC I answered
phone calls and assisted clients in reporting crimes to the police.
This is a great place to gain work experience. Talking to clients
also improved my communication skills. I have enjoyed volunteering
for CCPC's Neighbours First patrol program as well, helping tourists
and the Chinatown community.
Volunteer Testimony - Calvin Hong (Career Prep Student)
Volunteering for the CCPC was one of the best choices I'e ever
made. I gained lots of valuable experiences that were very useful
both in and out of school. In school, I can now tell the teachers
that I understand what employers are expecting from people and what
the required basics are. It also helped me to understand how to
interact with people in need. I also learned skills that I don'
learn in school, such as how to be a liaison between clients and
the police. It is very nice working here because everybody is so
friendly and eager to help us through everything.
Volunteer Testimony - Ian Yeung
I find the Front Desk the most challenging position of all. Victims
of crime call in seeking help, but not all cases are straightforward.
More often than not the caller does not speak English and speaking
Cantonese and Mandarin allows me to work more effectively amongst
the Chinese community. In fact, doing translation, both written
and oral, is an important part of my work with the CCPC.
Patrolling is another activity that I enjoy while volunteering
in the CCPC. I take part in both the Neighbours First foot patrol
program and the Chinatown Watch bike patrol program. While on duty
as a Neighbours First volunteer, I have to be outgoing and establish
a friendly atmosphere with the tourists and merchants in Chinatown;
but while bike patrolling in back alleys, I have to stay alert and
be prepared for the unexpected.
