COMPUTER VIRUS SCAM
People have been receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be an employee from Microsoft. Victims were told that there is a virus on the computer and that they called to offer their help. The caller then ask the victim to do something on the computer, which usually allows the caller to remotely access the victim's computer. The suspect then creates a fake screen to convince the victim that the computer is in a critical condition and needs fixing immediately. The suspect will then demand a credit card payment to fix the computer. After providing payment, the suspect will then return the victim's computer back into normal.
Tips to avoid becoming a victim:
- real computer company don't call people to advise them of a virus in their computer
- don't show interest in the matter and simply hang up the phone
- don’t go on any websites, or download anything
- contact your credit card company immediately if you have been scammed, and ask them to reverse the charge for you
